What GSM Should I Use? A Plain-English Guide to Paper & Card Weights.

If you've ever found yourself squinting at printer specs or second-guessing a paper order because it says "250gsm" and you don’t speak Fluent Stationery — you’re not alone.

At Mankey Monkey, we live and breathe this stuff (sad but true), and we’re here to demystify GSM — what it means, why it matters, and how to pick the right weight for your next masterpiece.

First up… What Is GSM?

GSM stands for grams per square metre. It’s a measure of how thick and heavy your paper or card is. The higher the number, the thicker the sheet. No jargon. No fluff.

The GSM Breakdown (No Calculator Required)

  • 80–100gsm: Classic office paper. Good for printing invoices, bad for anything exciting.
  • 120–170gsm: Flyer zone. Perfect for inserts, letterheads, and posters.
  • 200–250gsm: Premium paper. Strong enough for postcards, elegant enough for wedding invites.
  • 300–350gsm: Full-on card. Ideal for pre-scored greeting cards, packaging, or anything that needs to feel serious in the hand.

But Will My Printer Like It?

That depends. Most home inkjet and laser printers can handle up to around 250gsm without too much fuss. Some brave machines can go to 300gsm+, but always check the specs first — or run a single sheet test. (We’ve seen more than one printer throw a tantrum.)

So Which GSM Should I Choose?

It all comes down to what you're making. Here's our cheat sheet:

  • 170gsm – flyers, inserts, lined stationery, or notepads
  • 250gsm – wedding invites, notecards, high-end packaging
  • 300gsm – greeting cards, place cards, pro-feel menus

And if you want to avoid folding card that fights back, try pre-scored card — your printer (and your fingers) will thank you.

Does Recycled = Lower Quality?

Not on our watch. All our white recycled paper and card is made from 100% post-consumer waste — but it’s clean, bright, and prints like a dream. Better for the planet. Better for your projects.
