Different Types of Papers for Art

Different Types of Papers for Art

23 Aug 2021

Just like the rows and rows of art supplies that fill up an art store, numerous varieties of paper go with each of those different supplies. Some are delicate, and some are stiff. Some are thin, some are thick. Some are made from fresh wood, some are a product of recycled pulp.

Some are glossy, and others are matte. Some papers are perfect for drawing, some for writing, some others for painting, and others are great for origami and crafts. Some even contain seeds, so you can plant them once they're used!

So, whether you're an art connoisseur, or have to shop for your kids' art papers, here's a guide to help you pick the correct paper stock:

1. A3-A6 Size Printing Paper

Printing paper, also known as conqueror paper, are those matt white, lightweight papers on which you print hard copies. They're an excellent medium for oil pastels, crayons, colour pencils, felt tip markers, and origami.

2. Card Stock

As a card supplier, we offer a wide variety of card types, suitable for different project types. If you're looking for a product that has more rigidity, card stock or a card is a great option. These are available in a variety of colours, with double shades, adhesive peels, marbled and metallic textures, and are excellent for school projects.

You can use different kinds of paints, pencils, markers, and crayons on them. They're well-suited for 3D crafts, birthdays, weddings, or congratulatory cards, as well as for making cut-outs for larger projects.

3. Cardboard, Card Sheet, or Chart Paper

These are larger than ordinary arts and crafts papers, but they're an absolute delight to do art with. Cardboards, card sheets, and chart papers vary in their stiffness and texture, but they're great for similar purposes. You can use them to make large diagrams, placards, and a backdrop for your projects and presentations.

4. Gloss or Silk Papers

Gloss papers and silk papers, sometimes also known as 'glaze' papers, are used to beautify the exteriors of your projects. Instead of painting or colouring, you can wrap plain or patterned gloss papers for a more artsy, realistic look. These papers are also used as wrapping papers for gifts.

5. Kraft Paper

Kraft paper is made from residual pulp that comes from the manufacturing of paper products. They're brownish, lightweight, and are great for making up the basic structure of art projects of all sorts.

6. Parchment Paper

Parchment paper is a translucent, waxy paper commonly used to copy drawings from one medium to another. They are great for beginners who are into sketching. A more advanced form is Vellum, which is made of cotton and often makes a great wallpaper.

7. Mixed Media Paper

Mixed Media Paper are those thick, stiff scrapbook papers that are compatible with all types of art. You can use acrylic paints, watercolours, washi tapes, stamps, wax seals, gel pens, and anything you like on this type of paper.

8. Crêpe Paper

Crêpe paper has a cool, flexible texture that is ideal for creating elaborate structures. It's made by combining several layers of tissue paper together by an adhesive material. You can crease them, colour them, and structure them however you wish!

While all types of papers are useful in their own capacity, it's important to know which one is the best for your job. Here are the main eight categories that can help you find the right paper for your art!
